Swiss design pattern Scherenschnitte
Johann Jakob Hauswirth 1808-71
In the Gstaad region (Saanenland), Johann Jakob Hauswirth, a very poor
and almost unknown Swiss farm labourer and charcoal-burner, earned his
living by the day or by piece-work.
Apparently, when not hauling wood or coal, he spent his lonely days
making incredible paper cutouts depicting the breathtaking landscapes
and the hard working farmers he encountered. It has been told that his
fingers were so large he could not fit the thumb and forefinger into a
normal pair of scissors. Thus he attached two wire loops to accommodate
his giant fingers.
“He would go the round of the farmsteads, an itinerant hawker selling
little pictures of herds climbing the slopes to their summer pastures,
or of bunches of flowers, or of heart-shapes filled in with deer and
birds- all for a few sous.” Paper Cuts by Franco Maria Ricci, 1980.
